English is the official language
in most of the Caribbean,
including the islands of the
Bahamas, Jamaica and the Lesser
Antilles. Other islands have two
official languages: in Puerto Rico
it is English and Spanish, while
the Dutch islands speak English
and Dutch. Spanish is the official
language of Cuba and the
Dominican Republic. French is
the first language in the French
Antilles, Guadeloupe and
Martinique.
Creole is spoken throughout the Caribbean. Creole is a
language
which is a mixture of a European language, such as
English, French or Spanish and a second, usually African language. For
example, Jamaican Creole has
many Asante words which were
brought over from Africa
by slaves.
