Collapsing Metro Entrance Kills 7

The entrance to a St. Petersburg subway station has been reduced to rubble

1. The roof over the entrance to the Sennaya Ploshchad subway station, in down-town St. Petersburg, collapsed Tuesday evening, June 10, killing seven and injuring more than 10 people.

2. The accident happened at 19:40 when, for reasons thus far unknown, a big chunk of the roof above the entrance to the Station caved in, pulling down a portion of its supporting wall, with tons of concrete crashing on people on the stairs.

3. The staircase itself yielded under the weight, collapsing into the service premises below.

4. Rescuers worked late into the night clearing the debris and rescuing people from the rubble. The exact number of casualties is unknown.

5. The Sennaya Ploshchad subway station is one of the busiest in the city: It is on a line linking downtown with two large residential areas, and there is also a big outdoor flea market around it.

6. Rescue workers and special services examined the wreckage and ruled out an act of terrorism (although some eyewitnesses to the tragedy maintained they had heard a bang).

7. Flawed structure was cited as the most likely cause of the accident. The ill-fated entrance was built in the late 1950s and early 1960s and has not been renovated since.

8. Given that there is one more subway line laid nearby and streetcar tracks on the surface, vibration could have exceeded the safety level.

9. This is not the first such accident in the history of Russian subways: In 1988, a roof over the entrance to the Kirovskaya (now Chistye Prudy) subway station in Moscow collapsed, injuring several people.

10. At the time the accident was likewise blamed on the decrepit structure. Incidentally, in the wake of that accident, several other subway stations of similar design were immediately closed for renovation and repairs.
